Before you set off

A few quick answers.

What is VNLE?

VNLE is a visual narrative and dialogue editor for games. Write branching conversations, manage characters and narrative logic, work on translations and export your story as JSON.

Can I use it for a solo project?

Yes. VNLE is for individual creators as well as teams. You can write and organize your narrative in the visual editor. Connecting the exported JSON to a game is a separate step, with guides and examples to help.

Does VNLE work with my engine?

VNLE exports structured JSON rather than an engine-specific project. You can write an integration for an engine that can read this data. Your game controls dialogue presentation and gameplay. The Wiki includes guides for major engines, with practical examples and explanations of the JSON format.

Do I need AI to use VNLE?

No. The AI Assistant is optional. You can write, organize, localize and export your stories without enabling it. Using the assistant requires signing in with ChatGPT.

How does localization work?

The story structure is shared across languages. You work on translated text in VNLE or exchange an Excel translation package, then play through the story in your chosen language.

Which languages does the software support?

The interface currently supports English and German. For launch, we plan English, German, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, French and Polish. Interface language and the languages of your story are separate.

Where can I get VNLE?

Steam is the destination for VNLE. The final store link will be added here.
